Introducing Zenlayer Basic VMs – great performance at a lower cost
Posted On: Jun 09, 2023

We’re excited to introduce basic instances for Zenlayer Virtual Machines (VMs) as a lower cost alternative to standard instances for businesses that need easily scalable compute capabilities but not sustained peak performance.

What is a basic VM? What’s the benefit?

A virtual machine is a virtualized instance that uses the host server’s hardware to run its applications. Our basic VM allocates and divides the available underlying resources based on the needs and usage of each client on the host machine.

Allocating hardware resources based on usage allows us to maximize resource utilization so that we can accommodate more users simultaneously. This helps us lower the overall cost of operation and lets us pass the savings on to our customers.

How much can I save with basic VMs?

We currently offer basic VMs with configurations up to 8 cores, 16 GB RAM. Below, you’ll find a pricing comparison between standard and basic VMs.

As you’ve probably noticed from the table above, our basic VMs cost nearly 50% less than standard VMs on average. If your application needs high performance sometimes but not always, we strongly recommend that you give basic VMs a try to take advantage of the significant cost savings.

What can I do on a basic VM?

Basic VMs are best used for scenarios in which strict performance guarantees aren’t essential, such as small businesses, proof of concept, development, web and content hosting, and office productivity.

Small businesses: Businesses that have lower traffic and workload demands and a limited budget can gain access to essential compute and network resources at a lower cost through basic VMs.

Proof of concept: Businesses exploring new technologies or solutions can use basic VMs as a cost-effective way to quickly spin up temporary environments to test and validate concepts.

Development and testing: Basic VMs provide an instantly deployable, flexible, and scalable environment for development teams to build, test, and debug applications.

Web and content hosting: Websites and content management system (CMS) platforms that typically experience moderate traffic can cut costs by hosting with basic VMs.

Office productivity: Basic VMs are great for hosting productivity software like project management tools, document sharing platforms, and virtual meeting applications.

How do I deploy a basic VM?

If this is your first time provisioning Zenlayer VMs, be sure to check out our Quick Start Guide and short tutorial video to hit the ground running.

Basic VMs are currently available in Washington D.C., Frankfurt, London, and Hong Kong, with more locations coming soon. If there’s a location where you’d like us to make basic VMs available, be sure to let us know!

To find basic VMs, simply select one of the four locations named above on the Configuration page when you’re provisioning your virtual machine on zenConsole. Here, you’ll be able to filter by Shared vCPU as shown below:
