We just made it easier to connect to our global private backbone to accelerate your business. In addition to existing connection methods utilizing IPsec and SSL VPN, we’ve added support for generic routing encapsulation (GRE) to help establish Zenlayer Virtual Edge PoPs.
Zenlayer Virtual Edge connects you to our global backbone so that you can take advantage of our ultra-low-latency network to interconnect branches, clouds, SaaS, and data centers without deploying hardware or waiting months to establish a costly local loop.
We wanted to give customers who may be more familiar with or prefer to use GRE more options for connectivity. Similarly, businesses with an existing network that uses GRE can now replicate the same setup on our services.
What is GRE?
GRE is a networking protocol that allows the encapsulation of packets within IP packets. It’s primarily used to establish connections (point-to-point or point-to-multipoint) so that data packets can be transmitted over IP networks. One common application of GRE is in the creation of virtual private networks (VPNs).
IPsec and SSL protocols offer encryption and other security features whereas GRE does not. With no overhead dedicated to security, however, GRE effectively avails more bandwidth for data transfers.
How do I provision Zenlayer Virtual Edge through GRE?
To ensure smooth provisioning, please ensure that you have a CPE or vCPE that’s connected to the internet. Then, simply contact our sales team to initiate your order. Our provisioning experts will provide you with the GRE configuration information needed to connect your CPE/vCPE to your Zenlayer Virtual Edge.
If you prefer to provision Zenlayer Virtual Edge using IPsec or SSL VPN, both methods are now available through zenConsole. Check out this quick start guide to get started.
